The KU Summer Spanish Institute arrived in Barcelona
on 1 July, after twelve days of travel through central and northern Spain.
Barcelona, the
capital of the autonomous region of Catalunya, lies in the northeast
of the Iberian Peninsula.
Barcelona lies on a coastal plain between the mouths of
the Riu Besós and the Riu Llobregat. The city is surrounded by
mountains: Muntanya Pelada, on the northeast, Tibidabo, on the northwest,
and on the southwest Montjuïc, site of museums, parks, and historic
monuments. The city begins at its port and slowly spreads inland with
wonderful shaded boulevards and distinctive neighborhoods.
Barcelona
is a surprising mixture of tradition and the avant-garde. Its urban landscape
attests to the indelible marks left by artists and artisans in their
quest to express their Catalan identity. The result is vibrant and irresistible.
The
city is rich in culture and artistic achievement. It is the region's
most developed and populous area, a place of unending activity, a city
that
rarely sleeps.
The ever-changing panorama of designs and forms create
an environment unlike any other in Spain.
Barcelona
is vibrant, always alive, with splashes of color and unstoppable energy.
With a cultural legacy dating back to classical antiquity,
Barcelona blends the old with the new to create its own special vitality.
