EL ESCORIAL

The town of San Lorenzo del Escorial lies 30 miles northwest of Madrid. Surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Guadarrama, the town is the site of the magnificent palace - monastery complex built by Philip II to celebrate his victory at Saint-Quentin on August 10th, 1557. The palace complex includes a church, royal mausoleum, a library, a monastery, and museum. The picturesque setting combines with the ornate Baroque style of the building to create an unique monument to Philip's reign.
