The town of San Lorenzo del Escorial lies 30 miles northwest of Madrid. Surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Guadarrama, the town is the site of the magnificent palace - monastery complex built by Philip II to celebrate his victory at Saint-Quentin on August 10th, 1557. The palace complex includes a church, royal mausoleum, a library, a monastery, and museum. The picturesque setting combines with the ornate Baroque style of the building to create an unique monument to Philip's reign. |
